July 4, 2024 – Northwest League (NWL)
Press release from Hillsboro Hops

Hillsboro Stadium was packed to the brim for Wednesday night’s pitcher’s duel against the Eugene Emeralds. Hops starter Logan Clayton held the Eugene offense to just four hits and one earned run in six and two-thirds innings. Nefy Castillo and Jack Hurley each scored a run, and the Hops won the third game of the series 2-1.

Although Eugene got an extra-base hit early in the first inning, Clayton was able to quickly put them away. Clayton silenced the opposing batters, allowing the Hops to score the first run of the game.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Jean Walters hit a line drive double to right field to first. Nefy Castillo came on and hit a double to center field to score Walters and give the Hops a 1-0 lead.

Eugene’s first pitching change of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Emeralds starter Wilkelma Castillo stood up to the Hops, allowing just four hits and one earned run in five innings and striking out six batters. Trent Harris got the ball with Eugene trailing by one run.

The Emeralds tied the game in the seventh inning after Clayton allowed two walks and a double to tie the score at 1-1. After allowing the only Eugene run of the game, Logan Clayton was done for the day. Clayton struck out three batters, allowed three walks and pitched six and two-thirds innings. Landon Sims replaced Clayton and exited the inning before any more damage was done.

Hillsboro took the lead for good in the eighth inning when Junior Franco hit a ground ball for a single and Kevin Sim was given a walk. Eugene relief pitcher Trent Harris was replaced by Nick Morreale with two runners on base. Jack Hurley hit a ground ball that resulted in a force out, but allowed Junior Franco to score, giving the Hops a 2-1 lead and effectively handing the loss to Trent Harris. Harris managed four strikeouts and allowed just one hit and one earned run in two and one-third innings. Morreale managed two outs and one strikeout.

Hillsboro’s pitchers were phenomenal. Landon Sims was credited with the win after pitching one and a half innings, recording three strikeouts and allowing no runs. Carlos Meza entered the game in the ninth inning, recorded two strikeouts and allowed one hit, and was credited with a hold. Alex Baker was called into the game with one out remaining in the ninth inning and allowed one hit before getting the next batter to fly out and was credited with the save.

The Hops will face the Emeralds again tomorrow, July 4th, at 6:35 p.m. in Eugene at PK Park. The game will be broadcast on Rip City Radio 620 AM at 6:35 p.m.
