Serial rapist from Gweru sentenced to 31 years in prison

A 29-year-old man from Clifton Park in Gweru has been sentenced to 31 years in prison for multiple robberies and rape.

On 3 July 2024, the National Prosecution Service announced that Obert Ncube appeared before the Gweru Magistrate’s Court facing charges of three counts of robbery and two counts of rape.

The court heard that on March 5, 2023, Ncube and two accomplices, who are still at large, approached a 28-year-old woman who was walking home from the local grocery store.

Ncube blocked her path, pulled out an okapi knife and forcibly took her Huawei Honor phone worth US$60.

The defendant and his accomplices then dragged the woman into a nearby bush, where an argument broke out.
While his accomplices wanted to kill the woman, Ncube insisted on raping her, which he did in front of his accomplices.

The woman managed to escape. She hid in a pit until she reported the incident to the police the next morning.

On August 6, 2023, Ncube raped his girlfriend’s 18-year-old friend, a fourth-grade student, at knifepoint.

On an unknown date, he lured a sex worker, pretended to solicit her services, and then dragged her to the railway tracks, where he robbed her of her Infinix Hot 12 mobile phone worth US$165 and raped her multiple times overnight without protection.

Ncube was arrested on September 17, 2023 in another rape case and was found in possession of the third plaintiff’s Infinix Hot 12 cellphone. The third plaintiff clearly identified Ncube as the perpetrator.

On 18 September 2023, the first complainant also identified Ncube when she was delivering food to a relative detained in the holding cells.

Ncube was sentenced to a total of 31 years in prison for counts 3 to 5. The plaintiffs in counts 1 and 2 could not be located on the day of the trial.
