Miami, FL – A horrific incident occurred early Tuesday morning when a woman had her car stolen at gunpoint while filling up with gas.

The incident occurred shortly before 2:00 a.m. at a Chevron gas station on West Hillsboro Boulevard.

The 28-year-old victim stated that she stepped back to smoke a cigarette while filling up her white Volkswagen Jetta.

Authorities report that a man, later identified as Elias Orlando Caldoza, 28, of Miami, approached them wearing a black mask and brandished a firearm.

He demanded the keys to her car and her iPhone 14. Fearing for her life, the victim handed over her belongings.

Caldoza fled the scene in the stolen vehicle and headed east on Hillsboro Boulevard.

Fortunately, Margate Police were able to locate and track the car until it crashed near Sample Road and the Sawgrass Expressway.

Caldoza exited the wrecked vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, but was arrested by Coral Springs police.

A background check revealed that Caldoza is currently on probation for auto theft and is classified as a “violent felon of special concern.”

He is now charged with armed robbery/auto theft, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, violation of probation, and wearing a mask during a crime.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office is handling the case.
