Boulder County hires landscape architecture firm to create sustainability toolkit – Longmont Times-Call

Boulder County has commissioned Denver-based architectural firm Superbloom to develop a nature-focused urban planning toolkit specifically for the county.

“It will be a blueprint of all the different urban landscape strategies that Boulder County and its local governments can pursue,” said Dede Croissant, who leads the county’s nature-based climate solutions team in the Office of Sustainability, Climate Action and Resilience.

According to a press release, the toolkit will include strategies to mitigate natural disasters caused by climate change, such as the increase in wildfires and floods.

“We know the long list of nature-based solutions that exist… They asked us to focus on things that are really specific to Boulder County,” said Superbloom co-founder Stacy Passmore.

Stretching from the plains to fourteener Longs Peak, Boulder County has faced a long list of natural disasters, from floods to fires, over the past few decades. As the climate crisis continues, that list is likely to grow even longer.

The county and Superbloom confirmed that the contract is worth $50,000.

Croissant said the toolkit will include possible actions for the county and will be available to the public in the fall.

“This is the first step to achieving the very concrete actions we want to achieve,” Croissant said. “Right now we’re trying to really analyze everything that’s out there and prioritize the best possible actions we can take and then work together to implement them.”

Both Superbloom founders have experience in urban planning and policy. Passmore said the company is aware of the climate action already taken in the county and is in discussions with local leaders and experts to determine next steps.

“We look at how landscapes evolve – how we can change policies or regulations or create incentive programs that encourage better environmental performance,” Passmore said.
