President Biden’s surrogates are trying to write off his dismal debate performance on Thursday as just one bad night and are calling on Democrats to pull together and fight. But many in the party (and even more in the world of commentators) believe Biden should drop out and clear the way for a new candidate, lest the president’s weakness open the door wide for the disastrous return of Donald Trump.

Neither view captures the depth of the mess Democrats and the country are in. Biden’s supporters are underestimating the potential long-term damage of the president’s performance in the debate, which was designed to show the 81-year-old was up to the task but did just the opposite. But those who would like to head full steam ahead to an open convention are vastly underestimating how difficult that will be.
