Road near Hillsboro has been open again since April

HILLSBORO, Illinois — The road damaged by a sinkhole in April of this year is now partially reopened. Illinois 185, southeast of Hillsboro, is now a one-lane road.

Over the weekend of April 10-12, a 50-foot-wide sinkhole opened up next to the road. DroneFOX footage captured the massive sinkhole near the entrance to the Deer Run Mine.

“We were notified of the sinkhole situation on Friday,” said Kevin Schott, director of the Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency, in an earlier interview with FOX 2. “This highway runs between Hillsboro and Coffeen. Hillsboro is the county seat. The Graham Correctional Center is just beyond the sinkhole and is a major county employer. So yes, this highway is heavily trafficked.”

Traffic will be controlled by temporary traffic lights. Drivers should exercise caution when crossing this area or use alternate routes.
