Deadline for sturgeon spearfishing is approaching. | WTAQ News Talk | 97.5 FM · 1360 AM

(DNR) Oshkosh, Wisconsin – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds sturgeon spearfishermen that the deadline to apply for licenses to spearfish in the Upriver Lakes is August 1, 2024.

Due to the higher success rate on Upriver Lakes, only 500 license holders will be selected to harpoon a sturgeon from Poygan, Winneconne or Butte des Morts Lakes during the 2025 sturgeon spearfishing season. These spear tags will be awarded by lottery, with priority given to applications with the most preference points. For group applications, the point value will be determined by the individual applicant with the lowest points within the group. Spearfishers may also choose to purchase a preference point instead of applying for a tag.

Applicants selected to purchase a Upriver Lakes sturgeon spear license will be notified by October 1, 2024. Any license holder not selected in this drawing will receive a preference point for future drawings and may purchase a Lake Winnebago spear license. Spearfishers may apply for a Upriver Lakes tag or purchase a preference point online through the Go Wild system or at any license sales location.

The 2025 sturgeon spearfishing season in the Winnebago System will begin on February 8, 2025, on Lake Winnebago and the upstream lakes Poygan, Winneconne, and Butte des Morts. The season is authorized for a maximum of 16 days or until one of the annual biologically determined bag limits is reached. Separate bag limits will be established for each system: Lake Winnebago and the upstream lakes.
