Are these “frosted” Hokas the coolest running shoes…

Hoka may be one of the hottest running shoe brands around, but their latest collaboration looks like someone left a pair of their chunky-soled shoes in the freezer.

This, erm, super-cool collaboration comes courtesy of London-based innovative, technical menswear brand JL-AL (short for the name of executive creative director Jean-Luc A Lavelle).

It’s basically a cream-colored, breathable knit Hoka Clifton 9 that’s been adorned with white crystal-like nuggets to give the shoe a matte sheen. You can just imagine Elsa from Frozen wearing it while she roams the trails, “Let It Go” blaring from her earbuds.

JL-AL has quickly evolved from an Instagram-based brand three years ago to a head-turning brand known for technological innovation and experimentation.

This new collaboration may seem a little odd, but JL-AL and Hoka have collaborated before on the Hoka One One X JL-AL Tor Ultra Low and Tor Ultra High hiking shoes, which proved very popular. However, they seemed much more practical than this flashy running shoe that looks like it’s shedding little shiny bits of plastic (or whatever the ice crystals are) every time your foot hits the ground.

This model is clearly designed for sneakerheads rather than serious trail-beaters, although there are undoubtedly some people (like Lil Nas X) who would run a marathon in them.

But currently, the frosted version of the Hoka Clifton 9 is described as an experiment that may be released in spring/summer 2025. Strange, because you might think they want to bring it onto the market for winter.
