Tyler’s Tacos Food Truck opens in Petoskey

PETOSKEY – After more than a year of planning and preparation, Tyler’s Tacos in Petoskey is finally open.

Tyler’s Tacos officially opened on Thursday, July 4. People lined up to try out the new food truck before indulging in their need for fireworks and festivities.

The permit to open the truck – the last permit required – was granted on July 3.

“It’s a blessing and a curse,” Tyler McCarty, owner of Tyler’s Tacos, told the News-Review about the Independence Day opening. Having worked at Kilwins, McCarty said he’s used to the crowds that come with the holiday in Northern Michigan.

The new food truck is located on the north side of US 31, in the parking lot at 900 Bay View Road, and was custom built over the past year.

Originally from Harbor Springs, McCarty worked in Texas for a while, where he enjoyed Texas barbecue. After returning to Northern Michigan, he said he couldn’t find barbecue that matched what he had in Texas, so he started making it on his own.

After some encouragement from friends and family, the idea for Tyler’s Tacos was born.

“It was never on my radar,” McCarty said. “I’ve always loved cooking. I’ve worked in restaurants before and my grandmother and my mother are great cooks, but it was never something where I thought, ‘This is what I’m doing for the rest of my life.'”

The meat is smoked over Michigan hardwood and the tortillas are made in the truck. McCarty said he’s excited to get people to try the food, which has local influences and those reaching as far as Texas.

Currently, the truck offers homemade tortillas to go with the street tacos or barbecue tacos on the menu. The truck also offers rice bowls and a variety of drinks, including Jarritos.

The food truck is located next to a row of picnic tables overlooking Little Traverse Bay.

McCarty said the property belongs to his family and since it was unused, it made sense to put it there. The building on the site is considered storage space.

Tyler’s Tacos is open Thursday through Sunday from 12pm-8pm. For more information, check out their Instagram page at @tylerstacospetoskey.
