Colorado breweries swept the board at this year’s US Open Beer Championship, winning 38 medals in style categories ranging from American-style Pilsner to Imperial Porter.

The winners, announced during a livestream Monday night, were chosen from a pool of more than 9,000 entries, contest organizers said. In total, Colorado brewers earned nine gold medals, 18 silver medals and 11 bronze medals. That haul surpasses last year’s total, when local brewers took home 33 awards.

Denver’s Bull & Bush Brewery was the most successful with six medals, including a gold medal for its Imperial Pastry Stout Kauai Pie. Verboten Brewing & Barrel Project in Loveland and River North Brewery in Denver followed with five medals each. Aurora’s Launch Pad Brewery and Lafayette’s Cellar West Brewery each won four medals.

The US Open Beer Championship allows home brewers to compete against professionals, something that is rare in competitions. Christopher Burgess of Castle Rock benefited from this: He took gold in the Brut IPA category and was one of only three home brewers to place this year.
