Over 100 participants run at the Festival of the Bells 5k, Kids Dash

The Festival of the Bells 5k is a long-standing tradition that has featured a variety of courses over the years. This year’s event took place on Saturday, July 6th.

Because the event falls on a holiday weekend, it is often an opportunity for families and friends to get together and spend time together. Participants traveled from across Ohio, as well as Kentucky, Michigan and Florida.

Highland County Sheriff Randy Sanders led the 114 participants as they completed the 5K course through the aptly named “Hillsboro.” One participant pointed out that this year’s 3.1-mile course had more elevation gain than the entire Chicago Marathon.

A very generous anonymous donor has created themed signs for the course to keep participants updated and indicate how far they are in the course.

This year’s patriotic t-shirt design was an ode to the traditional bell-shaped sign posted in uptown areas with the dates of the festival, and Sydney Scott helped design it.

The top male runner, Cody Davidson, 31, of Wilder, Kentucky, finished with an official time of 17:21.4. The top female runner, Brandy Shular, 16, of Winchester, had an official time of 22:35.6.
