New Tyler District 2 council member takes oath of office

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – A new Tyler City Council member was sworn in on Wednesday, July 10. Newly elected Council Member Petra Hawkins (District 2) took her oath of office.

Petra Hawkins was born and raised in Tyler and attended public schools in the Tyler Independent School District. After graduating with honors from John Tyler High School in 1989, she attended Tyler Junior College and earned her Certificate in Proficiency in 1992.

After passing the Texas State Board of Nursing exam, she became a registered nurse. Just six years later, she earned her associate degree in nursing and received the title of registered nurse in 1998 after passing the state exams. She later devoted herself to her love and passion for real estate and became a professional real estate agent in Texas in 2022.

Petra is a member of the Tyler Chamber of Commerce, Tyler Metro Chamber of Commerce, Tyler Home Builders Association, National Association of Real Estate Brokers and is currently attending training to become a Community Education Specialist with the Tyler Independent School District.

Petra is a professional Texas real estate agent currently sponsored by eXp Commercial and affiliated with the Property Shoppe Group in Tyler, Texas as a real estate brokerage agent.

She is a daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, cousin, colleague and loyal friend. In her free time, Petra enjoys meditating and practicing mindfulness. She also enjoys spending time with her family, socializing, traveling, reading, writing/journaling, singing, gardening and swimming.

Petra has been married to Roderick T. Hawkins for over 28 years. They have three children: Tiasha, who is also a nurse and mentor, providing guidance, healing, and support on a spiritual level; Bria, who earned her Masters in Clinical Psychology; and “Lil Rod,” who earned his BBA from Charleston Southern University in Charleston, South Carolina, where he also plays football as a running back and is now in graduate school. In addition, they have ten grandchildren.
