91 Safeway and Albertsons stores in Colorado could be sold

If the merger of Kroger and Albertsons goes ahead, 91 stores in Colorado could be sold to C&S Grocers, which owns the Piggly Wiggly franchise.

For those of us who live on the Western Slope, seven stores are included in the deal. Stores in Grand Junction, Montrose, Delta, Gunnison and Durango are included on the list.

Why are grocery stores being sold in Colorado?

Kroger and Albertsons are in merger talks and will need to sell some stores to make the deal happen. They are currently negotiating with C&S Grocers to acquire the stores.

Originally, 413 stores were planned for sale nationwide. Today, there are 579. 91 of those stores are in Colorado, including most of the Safeway and Albertsons stores in the entire state.

C&S Grocers assures that no stores will be sold and no field staff will lose their jobs.

C&S Grocers owns Piggly Wiggly stores in 18 states and we speculate they could bring the brand to Colorado.
