Obituary for Shirley Richendifer Sides –

Shirley Richendifer Sides (Cushman), longtime resident and businesswoman of Longmont, CO, died March 19, 2024 in Sun City West, AZ at the age of 84. She was born in Longmont, CO on May 11, 1939 to Albert and Frances (Mondragon) Hervey. She graduated from Longmont High School in 1957 and soon began her lifelong involvement in the real estate business. Shirley married Walt Cushman in 1961, and from this union they adopted their infant son, Dustin, in 1970. They later divorced. She married Cley Richendifer in 1980 and they spent many fruitful years together until his death in 2008. Shirley married Al Sides and he predeceased her in 2017. In the early 1960s, she started as a secretary in a real estate office, received her sales license in 1966 and her broker’s license in 1970. After that, Shirley founded Cushman Real Estate and continued to run her own business as a single woman in a male-dominated world. She was highly respected for her accomplishments, which served her well throughout her life. In the 1970s, she was instrumental in the development of the Horizon West housing development on North Francis Street in Longmont. Shirley sold and managed real estate throughout the 1980s and 1990s until 1994, when she and Cley, the “Longmont Baby” (as he affectionately called her), decided a change was needed and purchased a peach orchard in Palisade, Colorado. They lived there for two years and then moved once again to Sun City West, Arizona. They spent the remainder of their years in Arizona. Travel was very important to Shirley, she and Cley toured the United States, Canada and Mexico. They greatly enjoyed traveling in their RV and also took several cruises. Their small dogs were always with them when they were on the road. Trinity Bible Church in Sun City West provided her with the spirituality she liked and a following of friendships she enjoyed. Churches in Lyons and Longmont were also important to her. The last few years Shirley spent her summers in Longmont visiting and entertaining family members and many lifelong friends. Spending time in her hometown was very comforting to Shirley. Shirley took great pride in running her own real estate and rental business throughout her life and continued to do so until her passing. She will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched. Shirley leaves behind her son Dustin (Cheri) Cushman of Paulden, AZ, her special niece Diana Daugherty (Frank) of Longmont, CO, and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as many dear friends. She is also survived by several stepchildren and step-grandchildren from the families of her two late husbands. She was preceded in death by her parents; her former husband Walt; her husbands Cley and Al; her brothers Bill, Roy, and Walter of Longmont, CO; her brother Bob of Grants Pass, OR; and her sister Betty of Erie, CO. A small family service will be held in Longmont on July 20, 2024. A memorial service will follow the service at 12:30 p.m. at 12692 Grandview Drive in Longmont.
