Hemel Hempstead Swimming Club (HHSC) celebrates its recent success at the Masters Championships.

On Sunday 16 June, Stevenage hosted the Herts Masters Championships at Hemel Hempstead Leisure Centre for the first time since 2019. Seventeen swimmers from the Hemel Masters team competed against local clubs including Berkhamsted, Bishop’s Stortford, Hatfield, Stevenage, Potters Bar, Ware, Hertford, Bushey, Hoddesdon and St Albans.

The team improved on their 2019 results, fighting hard and finishing in second place with 446 points. St Albans Masters secured the top spot with 616 points.

A spokesperson for the HHSC told HEMELnews: “Several swimmers were competing for the first time, taking part in new competitions or competing again after a long break from swimming.

“A great afternoon of swimming was rewarded with 57 personal bests in the age groups, 55 podium places and 14 club records.”

The highest scoring HHSC swimmers were Bev McKenna and Oli Burrough, followed by Jo Lee-Pearce and Nathan Whiting. Club records were set by Shane Coulson, Kevin McKenna, Jo Lea-Pearce, Bev McKenna, Dave Pirrie, Mark Ayres and Alberto Villa.

The club also celebrates the sporting achievements of several HHSC members. Shane Coulson ran the St Albans Half Marathon with his girlfriend Alice, while his mother and HHSC Vice-Chair Hilary took part in a 10k swim around Lake Windermere.

Dominick Kelly also took part in Sweden at the beginning of June and completed the Swimrun – 14 km running and 3 km swimming.

The HHSC team continues to grow under Masters coach Richard Daniel. If you would like to find out more please email [email protected]
