Aerosmith explains that Steven Tyler’s voice was permanently damaged by a vocal cord injury last year and the band will no longer tour.

The legendary band behind hits like “Love in an Elevator” and “Livin’ on the Edge” released a statement on Friday announcing the cancellation of the remaining dates of their tour and providing an update on Tyler’s voice.

“He has worked tirelessly for months to restore his voice to its pre-injury state. We have seen him struggle despite having the best medical team at his side. Unfortunately, it is clear that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible,” the statement said. “We have made a heartbreaking and difficult but necessary decision – as a band of brothers – to retire from the touring stage.”

Tyler announced in September that he had injured his vocal cords during a performance on the Peace Out: The Farewell Tour. Tyler said in an Instagram statement at the time that the injury had caused bleeding, but that he hoped the band would return after postponing some shows.

Tyler’s stunning vocals have been a staple of Aerosmith’s vast catalog of hits since their formation in 1970, including “Dream On,” “Walk This Way” and “Sweet Emotion.” They were about to embark on a 40-date farewell tour when Tyler was injured.

“We have always wanted to blow you away when we perform. As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other,” the band said in their statement to fans on Friday.

“It was a great honor for us that our music became a part of yours,” said the band. “In every club, on every big tour and in big and private moments, you gave us a place in the soundtrack of your life.”

Aerosmith is a four-time Grammy award-winning band and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Members include Tyler, Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer.
