OSHKOSH – Oncologist Anthony Phillips secured the Republican nomination for the new state’s 18th Senate District after defeating Appleton businessman Blong Yang, according to unofficial primary election results Tuesday.

Phillips will face Appleton Ald. Kristin Alfiem, who was the only Democratic candidate, in the Nov. 5 general election. The district was redrawn to include the cities of Appleton, Menasha, Neenah and Oshkosh.

Incumbent Republican Senator Dan Feyen was poached from the district and is now seeking re-election in the state’s 20th Senate district.

Current State Assembly Senator for the 53rd District, Michael Schraa, lost his bid for re-election in the 55th District, while incumbent Winnebago County Board Supervisor Nate Gustafson retained the Republican nomination.

Real estate agent Kyle Kehoe failed to secure a competitor in the Democratic primary and will face Gustafson in a newly redrawn district that includes Grand Chute, Fox Crossing, Winneconne and Omro.

Incumbent Kevin Peterson of the 40th State Assembly District, which was redistricted to the 57th, won the Republican primary against real estate expert Duane Wilson and will now face Ruth Caves, who ran unopposed for the Democrats.
