Bringing your dog along on your travel adventures can be a lot of fun, but how do you make sure the trip is fun and stress-free for both of you? These dog-friendly options and travel tips can help you plan a getaway for you and your four-legged friend.
Traveling with pets has become increasingly popular in recent years. In response, the travel industry has expanded its offerings for vacationers who bring their dogs. Pet-friendly accommodations, activities and transportation options make traveling with dogs easier and more enjoyable.
For many pet owners, their dog is their best friend, and having them along as a companion can be a welcome companion. According to data from Allianz, the number of people between the ages of 34 and 54 who prefer to take their pet with them on vacation has increased to 40%. Taking your dog on vacation also means you don’t have to worry about caring for your pet while you’re out of town.
Although your dog is welcome in many places, trying to drive to a place that doesn’t allow dogs can interrupt your trip or cause additional stress. Before you book hotels and pack your bags, choose the right itinerary to ensure you and your dog have a great trip.
The best pet-friendly destinations for your next trip
Many cities are dog-friendly for both locals and visitors. If you choose one of these cities to visit, you’ll have a better chance of finding accommodations and activities for your dog. Fortunately, many of these cities are also exciting travel destinations.
Key West, Florida
For a dog-friendly beach vacation, head to Key West, Florida. South Florida beaches offer beautiful stretches of sand and sparkling waters. You and your dog can relax in the sun, splash in the waves, and explore the city. Head to Key West Dog Beach for some off-leash fun. Dogs are also welcome on the Lazy Dog Kayak Eco-Tours.
Sacramento, California
Forbes chose Sacramento as the most dog-friendly city in the U.S. based on the accommodations and activities available. Sacramento is highly walkable and has dozens of dog parks, restaurants with dog-friendly patios, and accommodations that allow pets. Nature trails and the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains offer plenty of hiking opportunities. For relaxation, Sacramento is known as the “Farm to Fork Capital” and has a burgeoning wine culture.
Edisto Island, South Carolina
Edisto Island is a barrier island in South Carolina located less than an hour from Charleston. It’s a quiet beach destination for a relaxing, pet-friendly getaway. Edisto Beach welcomes dogs along its four miles of shoreline, and Edisto Beach State Park offers hiking trails. You can also take your dog on a nature tour provided by Botany Bay Ecotours.
Navigating hotels, restaurants and attractions with your dog
It’s a good idea to plan the experience for you and your dog before you leave. First, choose a dog-friendly hotel. Hotels of all price ranges have rooms that can accommodate dogs. Some even offer extras like dog treats or water bowls when you check in.
LaDell Carter, founder of Royal Expression Travels, points out when booking: “Some hotels advertise that they are pet-friendly but have restrictions such as weight limits or prohibiting pets from being left unattended in the room. To avoid unpleasant surprises, it is important to check these details in advance.”
Pet-friendly restaurants and activities
Restaurants with outdoor seating often accept well-behaved dogs. On Hilton Head Island, for example, the Skull Creek Boathouse offers shade, fans, and dog water bowls on its patios, so you and your dog can enjoy brunch in Hilton Head together.
When planning your vacation, focus on outdoor activities, as these are the most likely to be dog-friendly. Hikes, lakes, local parks, beaches, and national coastlines are ideal places to spend time with your dog. Individual businesses may also allow dogs. Check city tourism pages, online forums, and local business websites for more ideas.
Planning transport with a dog
Although there are many dog-friendly vacation destinations, getting your dog there can be a challenge. When planning your trip, consider how you plan to travel and what your dog is comfortable with. You should also check what requirements your mode of transportation and destination have for dogs. Proof of vaccinations, health certificates, and microchips are often required, especially when traveling internationally. Also, keep in mind that new rules for entering the U.S. will take effect in August 2024.
Air travel with dog
In their survey, Forbes found that about 33% of dog owners travel with their pup on airplanes. To meet the demand, airlines are offering more options for dogs who fly. Several major airlines allow small pets in the cabin as long as they are in a carrier that fits under the seat in front of you. According to NerdWallet, Alaskan Airlines, Frontier, Delta, Southwest, United and others allow pets for an additional fee. On major airlines that allow larger dogs, the dog must be placed in a carrier and travel in the cargo hold.
Some small airlines like BARK Air offer another option. Smaller planes allow dogs to sit wherever they want and move around the cabin. These airlines prioritize a relaxing flight for dogs. Dave Stangle, vice president of brand marketing at BARK, notes, “All furry passengers have access to various aids such as calming treats, noise-cancelling earmuffs and calming jackets to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable flight.” Dog-focused airlines may offer complimentary options such as meals for the dogs and the humans.
Road trips with the dogs
If your destination is within driving distance, road trips can be a great way to travel with pets. Most dogs enjoy car rides, and familiar surroundings are often less stressful for both of you. When traveling by car, you can also easily stop to stretch and walk.
If you’re traveling with your dog as a passenger, make sure your pup is secured and not a distraction. Carriers are a great way to keep your dog secure both in the car and at your destination. Dog seat belts and back seat hammocks also help keep you and your dog safe and comfortable during the trip. If your dog doesn’t travel in the car often, take a few test drives before you travel.
Plan your next adventure with your dog
With more and more cities, hotels and airlines offering pet-friendly accommodations, traveling with your furry friends has never been easier. Join the fun and travel with your dog and enjoy your vacation in a whole new way.
