According to Schultz, the Browns will use the extra space on the 53-man roster to sign running back D’Onta Foreman.
foreman signed He joined Cleveland as a free agent on March 22. The Browns released him on Tuesday to trim their roster to 53 players, although ESPN’s Field Yates noted that they could potentially re-sign him without putting him on waivers.
The 28-year-old played nine games for the Chicago Bears in the 2023 season, scoring 425 yards and four touchdowns on 109 carries.
He gives Cleveland some more depth at the running back position, as Nick Chubb will not make his season debut until Week 5 after the team kept him on the physically unable to perform list earlier in the year.
Huntley was the odd man out after the Browns initially kept four quarterbacks on their roster. Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reported Tuesday that Cleveland was listening to trade offers for the former Baltimore Ravens quarterback as well as Jameis Winston.
However, a trade never materialized and Huntley was released. The 26-year-old is likely to attract attention from opposing teams looking for quarterback depth, as he is only two years removed from his Pro Bowl appearance with the Ravens.
Huntley appeared in three preseason games with the Browns and completed 72.5 percent of his throws for 322 yards and three touchdowns compared to two interceptions.
With Deshaun Watson returning to the starting lineup and former fifth-round pick Dorian Thompson-Robinson coming off a strong preseason performance, there wasn’t enough room for four quarterbacks.
The Browns begin their regular season on September 8 at 4:25 p.m. ET against the Dallas Cowboys.
