Starting pitchers
Hunter Greene
We all know that Hunter Greene was absolutely dominant in July, with a 0.33 ERA and 29 strikeouts in four starts. Well, he continued that July performance into August in his start against the Giants last Saturday. He pitched just six innings, but allowed just one hit and no runs, struck out 11 players, and walked just one batter.
So how is he doing it? For one, he’s allowing fewer fly balls. His fly ball percentage is 31.2%, four percentage points lower than a year ago. His GB% is up this season as a result, but only slightly, to 36.6%. That’s largely because batters haven’t hit as many home runs off his fastball this season. Last season, Greene allowed 12 home runs off the fastball. In 2024, he’s allowed four. His hard-hit% and FB% are both down compared to 2023. He’s also figured out how to incorporate the split-finger pitch into his arsenal, which has allowed him to better utilize his slider. Batters are hitting just .166 with the slider, compared to .229 a year ago.

Kyle Tyler
Right-handed pitcher Kyle Tyler is a pitcher who has bounced around a lot, mostly in the minor leagues, since making his professional debut in 2018 when he was drafted in the 20th round. The Marlins are his fifth organization and are now the team he has pitched for the most at the major league level, with seven appearances, six of them as a starter.
In 2023, Tyler played in the Mariners’ Double-A organization and did not have a good season. He posted a 5.60 ERA in 135 innings, but also posted 138 strikeouts. This season, on the Marlins’ Triple-A team, Tyler threw much better, with a 3.06 ERA in 50.0 innings. Since the Marlins called him up, however, things have not been going so well for him. In July, he allowed nine runs on 19 hits and seven walks in 14.0 innings. August was no better for him. In his last start against the Braves on August 3, Tyler had his shortest outing of the season, throwing just 2.2 innings and allowing three runs on five hits and four walks.
Tyler mostly throws cutters and curveballs. He’s not a high-velocity pitcher, but he has a 38.7% whiff rate on his curveballs, which he throws more often against lefties. Based on the small sample size of his splits, it looks like lefties hit him better in the majors. However, he had 41 strikeouts against lefties in the minors, as opposed to just 25 against righties.
