Dallas Cowboys superfan in Waco pledges allegiance with ink
WACO, Texas (KWTX) – A diehard Dallas Cowboys fan has added another Cowboys tattoo to his collection just in time for the new football season. This one, however, is a unique nod to Jimmy Johnson’s famous line, “How ’bout them Cowboys?”
Chris Lowe of Waco had the sound wave, or visual audio graphic, of Johnson’s introduction to Ring of Honor at AT&T Stadium last December tattooed on his left forearm as a representation of the four famous words.
“I designed it. I took the sound wave. A lot of people may not know what sound waves are, but in the studio, they’re used to graphically represent audio data. So I took that sound wave, added a Cowboys star to the end, and now I’m wearing that on my arm for the rest of my life. ‘How about the Cowboys!'” Lowe explained.
Johnson first made the catchphrase famous when he gave a postgame speech on January 17, 1993, when the Dallas Cowboys defeated the San Francisco 49ers 30-20 in the NFC Championship Game and advanced to the Super Bowl.
It remained the battle cry of Cowboys fans throughout the 1990s, when the Cowboys won three Super Bowls in four years.
The phrase has remained popular over the past 30 years, appearing in commercials and television shows.
These were also Johnson’s parting words in his induction speech when he became the 25th member of the Cowboys’ prestigious Ring of Honor – and only the second head coach alongside Tom Landry.
Lowe got the tattoo during a recent trip to Las Vegas.
“What happens in Vegas doesn’t stay in Vegas!” joked Lowe.
Lowe also has Landry tattooed on his chest. In 2009, he got Cowboys Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith tattooed on his back, and in 2011, he got another tattoo when Smith stopped at the Central Texas Marketplace on a book tour.
Smith signed the tattoo and Lowe had it permanently tattooed.
Chris, 53, said he has been a Cowboys fan since he was a kid and shared with KWTX a photo with his grandfather from Christmas Day 1973 wearing a Cowboys varsity jacket and helmet.
He has countless memorabilia and collections at home and decorates his cowboy-style patio with them.
Chris is the lead singer of the Chris Lowe Band and his band played at a corporate party outside the Cowboys stadium from 2009 to 2016.
“I’ve probably been to over a hundred games,” he said.
Chris said he enjoys traveling to Cowboys games and watching them from home with his daughters and wife, Jackie.
He said that despite the Cowboys’ loss in their first preseason game against the Rams on Sunday night, he knew this would be the year for the boys.
“My motto is: once a fan, always a fan,” said Chris.
