Expanded free parking in downtown Denton due to construction closures

Free parking is available in selected car parks as major roads are closed due to road construction

As construction continues on major street improvements in downtown Denton, Texas, the city is taking steps to mitigate the impact on local businesses by expanding free parking. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has temporarily closed both N. Locust Street and N. Elm Street between W. Hickory Street and W. McKinney Street as part of the ongoing project, which is expected to be completed by September 30.

Despite the disruption, all downtown businesses will remain open and within walking distance. The City of Denton recognizes the challenges of eliminating street parking and is working with downtown stakeholders to provide free parking in select metered lots during the construction period.

According to a Facebook post from the City of Denton, stakeholders Eric Schmitz, Brad Andrus and Stephen Shannon were instrumental in securing these expanded parking options, ensuring residents and visitors can continue to support local businesses without being burdened with additional parking fees.

For those planning to visit downtown Denton, the city has provided a map of all expanded free parking, available on the Denton Main Street website. Visitors are reminded to look for the “Free Parking” signs before parking.

Denton’s vibrant local business community remains fully active and the city government encourages residents to continue to utilize these facilities during construction.

“One of the things that makes Denton so special is our incredible local business community,” the City of Denton noted in its post. “We believe we have the best of the best, so let’s go out and show them a little extra love this month.”
