How Flint: Treasure of Oblivion draws inspiration from comics to create a truly unique narrative
For Aurélien, this approach is also a way of paying tribute to Franco-Belgian comics, the reading experience of which is “a pleasure in itself”. Indeed, Savage Level has commissioned some of the best in the industry to create the illustrations for Flint: Treasure of Oblivion! The person responsible for the drawings is Fabrice Druet, whose works also include Methraton, the spin-off of the Black Moon Chronicles. But also Bruno Tatti, a talented colorist who worked on XIII and Blake and Mortimer…
The team also includes a storyboard artist and several writers, not to mention the game designers who developed the comic system from scratch using Unreal Engine 5.”We had to develop speech bubbles that adapt to the space occupied by each language while respecting the layout of the boxes.”, says Aurélien.Another challenge was finding a balance between what was shown in the comic, in 3D and in simple speech bubbles. It had to be just right or the narrative flow wouldn’t work..”
A final challenge was to ensure visual consistency between the 3D characters and their comic alter egos. To do this, Savage Level has a process that is quite unique in the video game industry: first, concept art is created, then a comic version, and finally a 3D model. Thanks to all this work, the studio is confident of being able to offer a truly original game formula at the end of the year. Our comic-inspired narrative is the game’s true innovation”, comments Aurélien, “and we hope it leaves a lasting impression – but the feedback we’re getting from players has already convinced us of that.“
