Jesse Ventura explains the WWE angle that was “too big for Vince McMahon”
Jesse Ventura discussed a proposal he made for WWE TV that he felt was so big, even Vince McMahon thought it was too much.
In addition to his success in professional wrestling and acting, Ventura also had a successful career in politics, serving a one-term governor of Minnesota after being elected in 1998. The Hall of Famer wanted to combine both worlds and had an idea for a storyline that he pitched to McMahon.
Speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Ventura stated that he is considering running for President of the United States after his term as governor ends and explained his intentions:
“I came to Vince McMahon. I’ll tell you this. I flew to Connecticut. I sat with him and Linda in Vince’s office and proposed the biggest approach the WWF/WWE could ever have taken. And it was too big for Vince.
Vince told me that he would support me in whatever I wanted to do politically. So I went to him and said, “Vince, we can make a plan right now. You can go public with the WWE and say we’re going to have our own presidential candidate, the WWE Party, the World Wrestling Party.” In the meantime, Vince has people in every state, he can send those people, get them registered to vote, and do whatever it takes to get on the ballot in all 50 states. He could do that for me.
I said, then you go ahead and do it, Vince, so that everyone thinks you’re the nominee. You’re going to be the nominee. But we’re going to do something where I come in and say, “Bullshit, I’m the governor. I’m the natural WWE presidential candidate.” Then you have a chat where Vince and I get two wrestlers to represent us. Whoever wins gets the nomination. My guy beats Vince’s guy.
Then I’ll be the presidential candidate of the World Wrestling Federation and have the right to vote in all 50 states because Vince could have done it.”
Ventura further expressed his anger that his pitch was not rejected, but McMahon ignored the request:
“Now here’s the part that made me angry and where Vince and I had a big falling out. I flew home. He didn’t even bother to call me to tell me off. I thought that was extremely disrespectful. When I flew there, first of all, he made me wait for an hour. I’m the former governor. I’m out of office now. Then I show him this angle.
If he had just called me and said, ‘Jesse, this is too crazy. This is too cheesy. I don’t think we can do this,’ I would have said, OK. I tried. But he didn’t even call me back. That was so disrespectful to me as Governor Jesse Ventura, as Jesse Ventura as a person, and as Jesse Ventura, who made Vince a lot of money.”
When asked when he last spoke to McMahon, Ventura replied that it was in late 2009 when he was a guest host on Raw.
Did Jesse Ventura agree to a new contract?
In late July, wrestling fans were surprised when the Hall of Famer appeared at a Raw taping in Minnesota, another sign that the company had entered a new era. In the interview, Jesse Ventura also explained his current status with WWE and his contract negotiations.
