Kansas’ license plate design beat the competition with 56% of the vote

More than 30,000 Kansas residents voted last week on the designs of the next personalized license plates and chose a design featuring the Flint Hills.

The Flint Hills plate received more than 56% of the vote, beating out the other four options. It will replace the “Powering the Future” plate the state has used for personalized license plates since 2020.

“We are excited to unveil the next design for a personalized license plate in Kansas and will now work to bring the design to production ready for Kansas residents to purchase in 2025,” said David Harper, director of the Kansas Department of Revenue’s Division of Vehicles.

The designs are only for people who want to have custom letters and numbers on their license plates. A personalized license plate costs $45.50.

The vote on the design is similar to the process the Kansas Department of Revenue used in December to select a new standard license plate design after backlash to a proposed design sparked a public vote. It was the first time Kansas residents voted on license plate designs.

The result was a license plate depicting the Statehouse dome at sunset, which delayed the process of implementation. The agency has not yet specified when exactly these license plates will be implemented.

“We received a lot of positive feedback from the vote on the standard license plate design and wanted to give Kansas residents another opportunity to vote on their preferred license plate design, this time for the personalized plate,” a KDOR representative said in an email.

The number of people voting on the personalized license plate designs dwarfs the process in December, when more than 270,000 people voted on the next standard plates.

An earlier version of this article stated that the “Powering the Future” license plate had been in use since 2015 and not 2020. We regret the error.
