Families will pay the price for latest layoffs at Grand River Hospital: NDP

Published on June 27, 2019

KITCHENER-WATERLOO — Doug Ford is forcing Grand River Hospital to lay off another 15 full-time nurses, a blow that comes after 38 full-time and part-time nurses were cut earlier this year.

Local Official Opposition NDP MPPs Laura Mae Lindo (Kitchener Centre) and Catherine Fife (Waterloo) released the following statement:

“Kitchener families are already struggling with the loss of 38 full- and part-time nursing positions earlier this year. Now, Ford is taking things from bad to worse for patients, underfunding hospitals and forcing Grand River to layoff even more front line health professionals. Cutting nurses means people will wait even longer in the ER waiting room, that patients will spend more time waiting for a nurse to come by to help, and that nurses will be even more run off their feet, rushing from patient to patient.

It’s now clear that when Doug Ford said no one would lose their job, he lied.

No one voted for cuts to frontline health care. Kathleen Wynne and the Liberals left health care in trouble — and families deserve changes now to make health care better, not worse. New Democrats will continue to fight for better.”
