MCSO: Werner’s shooting was murder-suicide
The McLennan County Sheriff’s Office has closed its investigation into the fatal shootings of a retired Tribune-Herald sportswriter and his wife, a retired high school English teacher, earlier this month.
Officials said Friday that the sheriff’s office report classifies John Werner’s shooting of Karen Werner as a murder-suicide, but no charges have been filed with the district attorney’s office or in criminal court.
John Werner, 67, shot his wife at about 3 p.m. on Aug. 12 in their Chalk Bluff home in the 200 block of Brazos Oaks Drive, then called authorities and then turned the gun on himself, sheriff’s office Lt. Hunter Herring confirmed in an interview Friday.
Karen Svendsen Werner, 65, was shot from behind at close range, the lieutenant said. No signs of a struggle were found.

First responders found the bodies of John and Karen Warner, who still showed signs of life, and had them taken to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Hospital, where they were placed on life support, Lt. Herring said.
According to investigators, officers found John Werner’s suicide note.
John Werner’s behavior changed in late February or early March when he stopped taking one of his prescription medications, Herring said, but medical reasons were not considered a motive.
Normally, investigators would apply for an arrest warrant for a suspect and then take the case to court. But that is not possible in this case because the person responsible for the shooting is dead, said First Assistant District Attorney Ryan Calvert.
“There will be no warrant to take us to court, and our office will not file charges,” Calvert said by phone Friday.
