NDP wants Ford government to stop undermining students' democratic rights

Published on March 23, 2021

QUEEN’S PARK – Official Opposition NDP critic for Colleges and Universities, Laura Mae Lindo (Kitchener Centre) has released a statement in response to the government's decision to appeal an Ontario Divisional Court decision from Nov. 21, 2019, when it unanimously struck down the Ford government’s controversial Student Choice Initiative (SCI):

“The court has already told the Ford government that its cuts and meddling in Universities is not legal. The so-called Student Choice Initiative attacks and defunds student unions, and cuts student services — especially those that support marginalized students.

Ford must stop the attack on university autonomy, students' democratic right to organize, and programs that help students stay safe and supported. The government is wasting taxpayers' dollars on unnecessary court proceedings with this appeal, when that money could be used to support those in need, especially during the pandemic.”
