Officials identify driver killed in truck crash and explosion on Route 3 in Clifton

Authorities have released the identity of a truck driver who was killed in an explosive crash involving a bus on Route 3 in Clifton Monday morning.

Luis Santiago, 55, of Linden, died when the tractor-trailer he was driving struck an NJ Transit bus and crashed into a guardrail on Route 3 East around 11 a.m. Monday morning, according to the Passaic County District Attorney’s Office. The impact caused Santiago’s truck to catch fire, causing a massive explosion.

Santiago’s body was discovered after Clifton Fire Department brought the fire under control. None of the 29 passengers on the bus reported injuries, prosecutors said.

The accident resulted in the complete closure of Route 3 as the investigation and cleanup continued into Monday night. As of Tuesday morning, all lanes and ramps have been reopened.

Three nearby homes sustained exterior damage from the fire’s heat, Clifton Fire Chief Daniel Collins said. All residents were back in their homes Monday afternoon after officials determined the homes were safe to inhabit.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office tip line at 1-877-370-PCPO or [email protected].
