Plans submitted for Gypsy and Traveller site in Flint – Deeside.com

Plans have been submitted to create a Gypsy and Traveller site on the outskirts of Flint, amid claims there is an unmet need for such facilities in the area.

An application has been submitted to Flintshire Council to provide parking for two families and a recreation room on a site at Leadbrook Drive, Oakenholt.

According to planning documents, residents have already moved onto the site and some work has been carried out without permission.

In a statement on design and access, agents acting on behalf of the families claimed that a lack of available sites for Gypsies and Travellers in Flintshire had led to several unauthorised building projects taking place.

They said: “The proposed development would consist of a significant change of use of the site to create a split pitch for Gypsy and Traveller families, which would include the creation of a semi-permeable surface, the erection of boundary fencing and landscaping.”

“As the family had nowhere else to stay, some of the planned works were carried out and the applicant and his family moved into the land which belongs to them.

“In preparing this planning application, the only needs assessment available appears to be the Flintshire Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment 2016, which identified a large unmet need in the county.

“This need was never taken into account by the local planning authority, despite the adoption of its new development plan in 2023.

“It has a detrimental impact on adults and children from the Gypsy and Traveller community and has ultimately led to unauthorised developments in Flintshire. This is one of those developments.”

Vehicle access will be via an existing connection to Leadbrook Drive, and wastewater disposal will be via a connection to the existing main sewer.

Comments on the plans are currently open on the Council’s website. A decision is expected at a later date.
