Smoke clears from sugar factory fire in Longmont

Smoke clears from sugar factory fire in Longmont

LONGMONT, Colorado – Smoke from a fire that broke out at the Longmont sugar plant Sunday morning is beginning to subside, officials said Monday afternoon.

Around 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning, Mountain View Fire Rescue said its crews, along with Longmont Fire, rushed to the sugar mill overnight after receiving reports of flames inside the complex. When firefighters arrived, they found the fire centered on wood materials stored in a machine shed.

Due to the hazardous conditions, emergency crews were unable to enter the building, so they will allow the fire to burn out for safety reasons, Mountain View Fire Rescue said. As a result, nearby residents may notice a plume of smoke in the area. Anyone living near the fire should keep their windows closed, the department said.

The same conditions prevailed on Monday.

“Due to the unstable and dangerous conditions inside the building, our firefighters are unable to enter the building to extinguish the flames,” the department said late Monday morning. “The fire will continue to burn until the materials inside are destroyed.”

Smoke began to subside Monday afternoon. While firefighters have begun clearing the scene, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and Longmont Police will continue to monitor the property for possible fire outbreaks.
