The Seahawks used big offensive moves to defeat the Sharks on Thursday, May 23, 2024.
Former University of Florida quarterback Tyler Murphy is the new head coach of the Cape Coral High School football team, replacing Isaac Harvin, a former Seahawks player.
Lee County School District spokesman Rob Spicker announced the change in an email Monday and also stated that Harvin is no longer employed by the district. Harvin, 49, who replaced Larry Gary as Cape Coral’s head coach this spring, had been suspended from his position since May 31 while the district investigated an undisclosed complaint against him.
Spicker said details of the investigation would not be available until Aug. 21. Harvin did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Murphy, 32, joined the Cape Coral coaching staff in January and was reunited with his former Gators teammate Jaylen Watkins, who is a defensive assistant for the Seahawks. The duo led the team’s practices this summer in Harvin’s absence.
“We challenge them every day to be their best and they rise to the challenge,” Murphy said during the Cape football team’s media session earlier this month. “It’s been great, it’s been a pleasure. And we’re looking forward to the season and giving it everything we’ve done over the summer on Friday night.”
A native of Westerfield, Connecticut, Murphy signed with the Gators out of high school in 2010, but didn’t attempt a pass until his junior season in 2013. After Jeff Driskel suffered a season-ending leg injury, he started six games and completed 112 of 185 passes for 1,216 yards and six touchdowns.
Murphy transferred to Boston College the following season, where he led the Eagles to a 7-6 record, including an upset win over No. 9 USC. The dual-threat passer set an ACC record with 1,079 rushing yards and became the first Boston College quarterback to rush for 100 yards in a single game, doing so four times. He also threw for 1,526 yards and 11 touchdowns.
