Tyler Perry’s ‘Divorce in the Black’ Earns More Prime Video Subscriptions in US Than Any Other Amazon MGM Film, According to Studio (EXCLUSIVE)
Tyler Perry’s latest film, Divorce in the Black, not only drew a lot of viewers – according to Nielsen, more than 498 million minutes were watched in the first four days it was available on Amazon Prime Video – but according to Amazon, the soap opera drama has also led to more Prime Video signups in the U.S. than any other film produced by Amazon MGM Studios to date.
The statement comes after “Divorce in the Black” debuted on Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming chart, where it landed at No. 3 behind Netflix’s “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” and Paramount+’s “If” during the July 8-14 period. Given the film’s nearly 2.5-hour runtime, the total of 498 million minutes during that period (the film was streamed on July 11) translates to an estimated 3.5 million views.

Luminate’s movie charts also continue to show the progress of Divorce in the Black. The film was watched for a total of 93.2 million minutes during the week of July 26 to August 1, its third week on Prime Video. (Disclosure: diversity and Luminate have a common owner, Penske Media Corp.)
In Divorce in the Black, Meagan Good plays Ava, a young bank teller in a tumultuous marriage. When her husband Dallas (Cory Hardrict) asks for a divorce, Ava is initially devastated and determined to fight for her marriage, the official logline states, “until fate intervenes and reveals Dallas’ evil deeds that destroyed their marriage and once sabotaged Ava’s destiny to be loved by her true soul mate.” Perry wrote and directed the film as part of his four-film deal with Amazon Studios. He also produced with Good, Angi Bones, Will Areu and Dianne Ashford.
Amazon did not disclose the number of subscribers or the name of the Amazon MGM film that previously generated the largest subscriber growth. The company had previously touted “Road House” as one of its top films, reaching more than 50 million viewers worldwide in the first two weeks of its release. The Jake Gyllenhaal-directed remake is set to get a sequel, Amazon MGM studio head Jennifer Salke revealed at the first-ever upfront presentation in May.
