Why Tyler O’Neill was cut by the Red Sox against the Diamondbacks
The Boston Red Sox lineup appeared to be complete again last week with the return of Triston Casas and Tyler O’Neill.
But the Red Sox were missing one of those hitters when they began an eight-game home series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night.
The Red Sox have dropped O’Neill from the list about 90 minutes before first pitch Friday because of inflammation of his left ring finger. O’Neill, who is second on the Red Sox with 22 home runs, was scheduled to bat fifth against Diamondbacks starter Ryne Nelson and play left field. Rob Refsnyder will take O’Neill’s place in the order and in the field.
O’Neill was activated from the injured list just last Saturday after missing 13 games due to a bizarre infection in his left leg. He has hit 2 of 15 shots since his return and perhaps the finger ailment is a reason for his recent offensive woes.

O’Neill came to the Red Sox with an injury history, and injuries were part of his first season with Boston. He spent three times on the injured list this season. The first was a concussion just weeks into the season following a violent collision with Rafael Devers, and in late May he returned to the injured list due to inflammation of his right knee.
The Red Sox slugger, who has a .262 batting average with 46 RBIs, has played in 84 games this season. He has only surpassed the 100-game mark once in his career.
